Exam Advice

Being a successful engineer has never been a cakewalk for anybody. Only being tech-savvy and having an IQ higher than the general masses doesn’t guarantee a precisely carved path to achieve success as an engineer. Ask a handful of kids what they want to be when they grow up and you will be hearing a myriad of answers and amongst those, a lot would want to be engineers. While some of them might have always been interested in tinkering with objects and super curious about their mechanisms, the other half might have had very little first-hand experience of witnessing what engineering is really like and what engineers do in actuality.

Why Engineering?

While there are several majors or branches in engineering, a student must assess himself thoroughly with regards to his set of skills and his realistic long-term goals. This, however, does not mean that one is not allowed to dream of extravagant and detailed ideas. After all, dreams materialise in reality if you work towards it. Engineering majors span a broad spectrum of subjects, with over 20 different ones including Aerospace/Aviation, Biomedical, Chemical, Computer Science, Mechanical, Metallurgical, Nuclear and what-not. It’s noteworthy how newer streams are emerging with the development of technology every day.

Regardless of whichever field of engineering you want to major in, slow down and pause for a moment to think why you actually want to tread this path. Is it because you have a bottomless curiosity about machines and mechanisms? Or is it because you are in the game because of the alleged ‘prestige’ that is associated with becoming an engineer? Is it because of familial pressure or because of the money you think this career choice will bring you? You might not have an appreciable answer to your question right away but introspection is important. You know yourself best and should be able to analyse your skillset. This would be a key factor in helping yourself determine if you would thrive and flourish in the field of engineering.

Necessary skills

Along with laudable technical know-how, engineers possess skills to solve problems and issues and make things easier for the common man in their daily lives. Hence, it should not come off as a surprise that engineers are held in high regard and much sought after. So what exactly helps you decide if you would make an awesome and successful engineer? Here, we shall look at some of the essential traits required of a person to become a full-fledged engineer.

Passionate about math and science

Most engineers are immensely skilled in mathematics and science. Engineering is no cup of tea and requires one to be able to analyse and solve problems of varying difficulties. Solutions that they come up with should be new and creative which can improvise the existing system when implemented. However, just because we have reached a point in time where computers and software perform almost all operations for us, engineers should still have amazing math skills to be able to interpret the results obtained.

Engineers are intrigued by the mechanisms and processes of how different objects run or work. Children who are best suited for engineering try dismantling and assembling mechanical toys in order to feed their curiosity about how the toys work. Some of you might have been told that being too curious and having expectations can lead to disappointment. You might have been super curious about something at some point in time but when your questions were answered, you might have been left dejected because the answers weren’t what you had expected. However, finding the answer to your questions is a reward in itself. Curiosity killed the cat but satisfaction brought it back.

Analytical Abilities

Before trying to find the solution to any kind of problem, one must analyse the problem first thoroughly before implementing any changes. That is exactly what engineers are expected to do. Analytical abilities are extremely crucial for an engineer because no solutions can be devised for a problem which has not been studied properly. An engineer should be able to list out all prerequisites to solve an issue so that adequate resources and manpower could be used to eliminate problems without any hiccups.

Logical Thinking

Engineers exist to make our day-to-day lives simpler. While analysing a problem is necessary, it is equally important for the engineer to understand all aspects of a problem and how it can be resolved with practical solutions. With constant curiosity, engineers should be able to comprehend how individual elements work together in a unit and use that information to resolve any existing issues. Logical thinking skills are indispensable for an engineer.

Problem Solvers

Once a problem has been identified, the next step is to come up with solutions for the same. Engineers must be efficient in solving problems and devise solutions to make our daily lives easier. In order to do this, they should apply their analytical and logical abilities and formulate a strategy to eliminate all issues.

Being able to think outside of the box and present new ideas which are creative is extremely important. Engineers who are able to bring new ideas to the table to improve the current system are often successful and valuable to the industry. Their creative and innovative attitude make them an important and indispensable asset to the company.

Good Communication Skills

Engineers communicate with a broad spectrum of people. With little technical experience to the ones who are extremely skilled, an engineer should be able to easily relay a problem or solution to them without the other person getting confused. Communication skills play such a huge role inside the industry that an engineer without effective communication skills would not be very useful.

Team Player

As they say, teamwork makes the dream work. Engineers are required to work as a team on several occasions. Sure enough, there are times when they are expected to exhibit exemplary performance while working on their own but no game can be won alone and no project can be completed alone. Building trust among the team members is a no-brainer as they will be working together a lot of the time and none of them should feel that they are jeopardising their position in the team or credit for their work.

Working under pressure

There are times when the tough gets going and staying calm and poised is the one thing that successful engineers do. With approaching deadlines or problems that require to be resolved almost immediately can get one’s heart beating under the stress. Being able to not lose it and working just as efficiently under stress or pressure is an important skill.

Technical knowledge

We are at a point in history where computers, technology are taking over every sector that one could think of. Engineering relies heavily on computers and machines. With such heavy reliance on these, efficient engineers should have commendable knowledge on how to operate computers and technological devices to acquire the best results out of them.

Constant desire to learn

In addition to all of the above-mentioned qualities, an engineer should have a desire to feed his curiosity that runs as deep as an abyss. With technology evolving at such a rapid rate, engineers should keep themselves up to date with all the latest advancements and news. Without engineers, it would not be possible for society to develop at the rate it does today and the advancement of technology would eventually come to a standstill. Hence, engineers should always make use of the information gained to implement changes for the betterment of the society.

It is undeniable that engineers are an indispensable asset for our society to progress at colossal rates and it is important for these engineers to be highly efficient and skilled at their jobs. If a vast majority of the engineers today were to develop these skills, it would be possible for technology to evolve at an unprecedented rate which would make life so much easier for the common man.
