The National Testing Agency (NTA) has announced new changes to the JEE Main 2020 exam pattern. As you already know, JEE Main 2020 comprises of 2 papers, paper 1 for engineering aspirants and paper 2 for students seeking admissions in architecture and planning courses. In this article, we will focus on the changes made in Paper 1, i.e. for engineering aspirants (B.E/B.Tech). Before we take a deep dive into the changes made here is a quick recap of all the important dates you must be aware of if you are planning to write the JEE Main 2020 examination.

Important dates for JEE Main 2020

January Session

Notification release: August 2019

Release of Application Form: 3rd September 2019

Last date to submit the application form: 30th September 2019

Last date of fee submission & image uploading: 1st October 2019

Application correction window: 11th – 17th October 2019

Availability of Admit card: 6th December 2019

JEE Main 2020 Exam: 6th – 11th January 2020

Declaration of Results: 31st January 2020


April Session

Release of Online Application: 7th February 2020

Image correction window opens: In the month of February 2020

Availability of mock test: In the month of February 2020

Last date to submit the application: 7th March 2020

Last date of fee submission & image uploading: 2nd week of March 2020

Downloading of Admit card: 16th March 2020

JEE Mains 2020 Exam: 3rd – 9th April 2020

Announcement of Result: 30th April 2020


Changes introduced by NTA for JEE Main 2020 

Revised exam pattern of JEE Main 2020 for B.E./B.Tech

According to revised JEE Main 2020 exam pattern proposed by the NTA, the question booklet of B.E./B.Tech (Paper 1) will have a total of 75 questions from Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. Out of the total questions in JEE Main 2020 paper 1, each subject will have 20 objective type multiple choice questions along with 5 numerical based questions.

There were no numerical based questions asked in JEE Main earlier. Also, the total number of questions in JEE Main 2020 paper 1 has been reduced to 75 from 90 questions last year.


Subjects: Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry

No. Of Questions: 25 (20 MCQ + 5 Numerical) across all three subjects

Type of Questions:

- 20 objective Q’s – Multiple Choice Questions (MCQs)
- 5 questions with answers as numerical value

Marks: 100 marks each subject.

Total: 300 marks

Marking scheme of JEE Main 2020 for B.E./B.Tech

MCQ based questions

Correct Answer: Four mark (+4)

Incorrect Answer: Minus one mark (-1)

Unanswered / Marked for Review: No mark (0) 

Numerical based questions

Correct Answer: Four mark (+4)

Incorrect Answer: No mark (0)

Unanswered / Marked for Review: No mark (0)
