VITEEE v/s JEE Main v/s BITSAT: Which Engineering exam is tougher?

December 14, 2018

So the question is ‘Which Engineering exam is tougher?’

If you are laughing at why the question comes up in anyone’s mind in the first place, you have much to learn about Indian Engineering entrance exams! Oh boy, you couldn’t be more wrong.

There is no second thought about the Indian Institutes of Technology being the most sought-after engineering institutes in India. So, students are justified in thinking that the IIT entrance test is the toughest among its peers.

Around 100 students compete for one seat in BITS, through the BITSAT (Birla Institute of Technology and Science Admission Test), the online test for admission into degree courses at Birla Institute of Technology and Science. In comparison, only half that number (approx.) contest for a seat at the JEE-Mains. BITS has 3 campuses in total – Pilani, Hyderabad, and Goa but the number of IITs has gone up phenomenally today. So, if you look at it solely from the competition per seat, BITSAT is tough!

When we look at numbers, there are around 33,365 seats in 18 IITs, ISM Dhanbad, 32 NITs, 18 IIITs and 19 other Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). From the JEE-Main result, the top 2,00,000 students can appear for JEE Advanced for 10,006 seats. So, 20 of these successful students contest per seat for 18 IITs and IIT-ISM Dhanbad.

The VIT entrance exam is conducted for admission into Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore, Tami Nadu. And 40 students compete for one seat here. The exam is taken by at least 2 lakh students across India for admission in VIT which offers around 5000 seats. What is special about VIT? VIT sees the largest number of applicants among deemed universities because of its placement record, especially in the IT sector,” said Jayaprakash Gandhi, the nation’s foremost educational consultant.

Other factors that contribute to the tough competition is the number of attempts allowed. IIT JEE Advanced can be taken only TWICE by a candidate in his lifetime. And there is also a strict age cap for the IIT JEE exams. Eligibility also depends on the school final exam results.
